The International Foundation Year, Health Science program at DIFC is a specialized university preparatory course designed to support international students in the study of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy. THE DIFC is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (RCSI) for admission to its medical degree programme (6-year course).

The Base Year (FY) consists of two semesters, which run from September to May of the first year of the six-year medicine program:

  • Semester 1 (FY1) – September to December,
  • Semester 2 (FY2) – January to May.

Each semester consists of several weeks of direct study, one week of repetition, and two weeks of exams.

FY will provide students with a solid foundation in biomedical sciences and professionalism, the necessary IT skills to work effectively in the university's virtual learning environment (VLE).

The course consists of a series of separate five credit modules (1 semester) and integrated system modules (2 semesters).

The structure of the program is as follows:

First semester:

  • Fundamentals of Medical Physics (5 credits)
  • Fundamentals of Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry (5 credits)
  • Fundamentals of Human Biology (5 credits).

Second semester:

  • Diagnostics and Therapy of Diseases (5 credits)
  • Medical and pharmaceutical chemistry (5 credits).

Both semesters:

  • Musculoskeletal, Nervous System, Skin, Special Sensory, Reproductive and Endocrine Systems (10 credits)
  • Cardiovascular, Respiratory, Immune, Gastrointestinal and Excretory Systems (10 credits)
  • Professionalism in the field of medical sciences (10 credits)
  • Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (5 credits).

A mixed approach to teaching and learning is applied. FY comes as:

  • Lecture
  • Tutorials
  • Study in small groups
  • Laboratory practices
  • Electives.

The textbooks serve to strengthen and improve the understanding of the fundamental concepts outlined in the lectures, testing students' basic understanding through applied tasks in a practical context.

Each module is assessed independently by a combination of continuous assessment (laboratory records, mid-semester MCQ scores, reflective assignments, group projects) and final MCQs at the end of the semester and short questions (SNQ).
