The Rhode Island School of Design, one of the first independent colleges of art and design in the United States, was opened on March 22, 1877 as a school and museum. In the 1930s, RISD began offering full undergraduate programs, earning an excellent reputation in the field of forward-looking studio education. RISD was founded and nurtured by a small group of women over 40 years before women in America even got the vote! That same year, Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalfe called for the $ 1,675 left over from the Rhode Island Women's Group centenary celebration to be invested in the creation of a school of art and design.

Advanced program for high school students

The RISD Advanced High School Program is a series of intensive, university-level courses for students in grades 10-12 (or similar) aged 15-18. This immersive online experience is for those with an interest in art and design in college looking to explore best practices in portfolio building.

Whether you are a student looking for credit, an adult looking for creative development, or a creative professional looking to make a career change, you can advance your creative practice at Rhode Island School of Design in the summer. All courses offer 3 credits and last 6 weeks.

Adult programs

RISD CE offers creative courses in a variety of fine arts and design fields, from lectures, personal enrichment and professional development workshops to specialized certification programs and summer credit courses.

Courses for children and teenagers (13-17 years old)

Children and teens attend RISD CE classes to grow creatively as their artistic ability develops. Lead by eminent artists, designers, educators, courses focus on the artistic process with an emphasis on design, communication and creation. Year-round classes cover topics in 2D, 3D, digital art, design.

Certification programs

Any RISD CE course can be taken for personal or professional enrichment, many of which can be taken as part of a certification program. Certification programs are designed for students who want to accelerate their creative life and work by joining the alumni community.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Freshmen are accommodated in Essential RISD buildings at Quad, Hill Houses. From one to four students live in the rooms, the rooms are located on the floor with common spaces (study, work rooms, kitchenettes, public lounges, shared bathrooms). First year students enroll in the Foundation Meal Plan, while continuing students can choose the Residential plan.

Living at Alcove Suites at 15 West offers to students a higher level of privacy and independence than Essential RISD accommodations. Each room has a kitchenette, bathroom. Amenities include air conditioning, communal areas, laundry facilities, work rooms, and easy access to the Fleet Library and Portfolio Café. All students staying at Suite Experience Housing can choose the Foundation or Residential Dining plan.

All options available at 15 West, Charles Landing, Colonial Apartments and Dwight House include bathrooms, common areas, fully equipped kitchens.

Meals: using the freshest ingredients and craftsmanship and creativity, RISD Dining + Catering professionals prepare delicious and nutritious meals. The cooks are very careful in preparing organic dishes from local produce, trying to match the preferences of the students.

Activities Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)

The Rhode Island School of Design holds annual events:

  • Orientation - High school students help design and launch an exciting series of programs to help new students to get involved in RISD life.
  • RISD Weekend is an annual alumni meeting held in October. At this time, demonstrations, seminars, open studios, receptions, exhibitions of works by alumni and students in the open air are held.
  • The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial MLK Series is dedicated to national defenders of justice and equality to reinforce commitment to service, community participation.
  • The "Ball of Artists" is held every autumn on the eve of Halloween - students dress up, a bright party is accompanied by loud music and dancing.
  • Open Studios - in the end of each semester, students from all 16 major departments, 18 graduate programs invite people to show how their work is progressing.
  • The thesis exhibition is an open exhibition of the master's graduate works, the culmination of the RISD master's experience.
  • Commencement is a fun, relatively informal, colourful ceremony that offers a decent festive fireworks display for the latest in art and design.
