Montreal (Summer School) is a summer school that provides short-term English language courses for children from 12 to 18 years old.

The education takes place on the campus of the state research university McGill University. This institution is considered the third among the best Canadian universities and is regularly in the leading rankings of higher education institutions in the country. In the world list of universities, McGill University ranks 51st. Among the graduates of the university are 12 Nobel laureates, three astronauts, Canadian prime ministers and members of the Supreme Court, foreign heads of state, as well as ambassadors and Olympic medalists.

English Course

  • The training period is two weeks.

The two-week residential English course includes:

  • 20 lessons of 45 minutes: reading, writing, speaking, listening and vocabulary building,
  • Accommodation in a host family or residence in the format of full board,
  • Exciting full-day excursions and half-day trips weekly,
  • Activities on campus at lunchtime, in the evenings.

Upon admission, students take a small language test, after which they are divided into classes. Training is organized in groups of up to 17 people, which contributes to the regular practice of speaking skills and the strengthening of communication between students. Teachers conduct lessons in a playful format to keep children interested in learning and make their summer holidays unforgettable.

The price includes all the necessary services.

English Course (Day Programme)

  • Age - from 12 to 17 years,
  • The training period is two weeks.

The full-time language program is suitable for students who have housing near campus. The academic composition of the full-time course does not differ from the curriculum of the residential program, includes:

  • 20 language lessons of 45 minutes,
  • Training in small classes of up to 17 people,
  • Possibility of individual consultations with the teacher,
  • Full-day excursions and short trips with sightseeing, visiting museums and concert halls,
  • Entertainment activities on campus at lunchtime, in the evening.

The division of students into classes, which takes place upon admission to the course, helps them feel comfortable and gradually develop their language skills. The basis of the program is a communication approach that contributes to the intensive improvement of reading, speaking and listening skills. Vocabulary building is also one of the important foundations of linguistics – students learn new words in class and use them immediately in everyday life.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Students have the opportunity to choose one of the places of residence offered by the school: accommodation in a host family or the Bishop Mountain residential building.

Accommodation in a host family provides children with:

  • Housing 45-60 minutes from campus,
  • Single rooms (double, triple - for students traveling together),
  • Shared bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms for all residents of the house,
  • Full board,
  • Laundry and linen, cleaning once a week,
  • Bed linen, towels.

Accommodation in the Bishop Mountain residential complex is:

  • Located in the heart of Montreal,
  • Single rooms for single students, double rooms for those traveling in pairs,
  • Beds, wardrobes, desks and chairs, washbasins and mini-fridges in each room,
  • Self-service laundry for a small fee,
  • Bed linen, towels and room cleaning are provided daily.

All students, no matter what accommodation option they choose, are provided with three meals a day. It is served in dining halls on campus and in accommodations, packed into lunches during day trips.

  • Breakfasts: French toast, pancakes or waffles, scrambled eggs, fruit and drinks,
  • Lunches: a variety of salads, rolls, hamburgers and pastas,
  • Dinners: hot dishes, desserts, pastries,
  • Snacks between meals: desserts, pastries, sweets, drinks.

Activities McGill University Montreal Summer School

A variety of activities are organized between English lessons and in the evenings. Exciting events are held by the school's teachers both on campus and in the vicinity of Montreal. 

The leisure program includes:

  • Sports activities: football, rock climbing, volleyball, ice skating and jet skiing, mini-golf,
  • Cultural events: thematic workshops, visits to museums and research centers,
  • Evening activities: jazz festivals, performances of Shakespeare in the park, excursions to the underground city.

Each of the summer programs necessarily includes full-day excursions, where students will be able to explore the surrounding nature of Montreal, its history and attractions. They will visit:

  • Ottawa: On this trip, students will visit the beautiful Rideau Hall Garden and the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. They will be able to see more than 100 ceremonial trees planted by politicians and dignitaries from around the world.  After the main tour, children will have a walking tour of the city near the parliament buildings, the Rideau Canal, the Byward market,
  • Quebec City: This excursion includes a visit to the Montmorency Falls and the historic city of Quebec. Montmorency Falls is the highest in this province.  Students will be impressed by the grandiose expanses of nature, urban architecture. A one-hour walking tour will allow you to learn about the history of Quebec, see the Dufferin Terrace, the famous cannonball, the St. Lawrence River and, of course, the world-famous Château Frontenac,
  • Mont Tremblant: Students are introduced to a charming city located about 1.5 hours from Montreal. There are various shops, cafes, an incredibly rich cultural heritage. The city is located by the lake, at the foot of the mountain of the same name, which in winter is a famous ski resort.  On this excursion, students are given the opportunity to try their hand at hiking, cycling, canoeing and ziplining.

Facilities and equipment at McGill University Montreal Summer School

Montreal is a magnificent city with many natural beauties and attractions, which uses two languages: French and English, which makes it attractive for tourists from a dozen countries and students who want to learn them.

Academic classes of the summer school are held on the campus of Dawson College at McGill University. Students have access to:

  • Bright modern classrooms with air conditioning,
  • Common spaces for relaxation, communication and self-learning,
  • Fields for team games and individual education in the park nearby,
  • Wi-Fi throughout the study area.

Near the campus there are houses of host families, a residence, many cafes and restaurants, a large park. Montreal International Airport is about a 20-minute drive away.

Admission dates and extra charges

Each 14-day course includes 10 half-day trips, full-day excursions. Its cost already includes English lessons and educational material, three meals a day, tourist trips and entrance tickets to events, a leisure program on campus, transfers. The day program excludes payment for accommodation.

Approximate schedule of the week:

  • Sunday: arrival at campus and orientation event,
  • Monday: class assignment, campus tour and party,
  • Tuesday: academic studies, a walk to the nearest attractions and shops,
  • Wednesday: academic classes, attending a jazz festival and free time in the evening,
  • Thursday: academic classes, attending a concert and entertainment center,
  • Friday: academic classes, excursion for a few hours and farewell party,
  • Saturday: full-day trip with dinner at the restaurant.

Enrolment process

The admission procedure consists of several stages:

  • Clarification of the availability of places on the course,
  • Filling out an online application with the provision of the necessary documents,
  • Receiving an invitation to study,
  • Arrival on campus and passing a small language test for distribution to classes.

Perspectives

The certificate, which is received by all graduates of the language course, will help students prove their knowledge of English when entering high school, college. The document contains information about the number of lessons attended, the progress of skills, and a recommendation from the teacher.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

For admission, children must have valid documents: passport, visa or residence permit in Canada, health insurance. They also need to be appropriate for the age range of the courses:

  • Residential program: 12-18 years old,
  • Day program: 12-17 years old.

The level of initial knowledge of the English language is not important, so a certificate is not required for admission.
