Family Courses

  • Age - from 5 to 15 years old (for children accompanying adults of any age),

The institution offers a course for everyone, regardless of age or level of language proficiency. The family program, designed for parents and children aged 5 to 15 accompanying them on campus, will be of interest to both adults and children. This course provides a fantastic opportunity for families to bond, learn a new skill, make new friends from all over the world, and see the sights of London and the cities closest to it.

In addition to English lessons in the morning and recreational activities in the afternoon, families are offered one full-day excursion per week and free time to spend together.

General English courses are designed to help students communicate successfully and confidently in real-life situations. Classes have a maximum of 12 students to ensure that each student receives personal attention from the teacher. Although classes focus on speaking and listening, students have the opportunity to practice all four skills, which helps them reach their full potential.

Students can choose the duration of study from 1 to 24 weeks; All students who want to study longer should familiarize themselves with international semester courses.

General English courses are presented in 2 variants:

  • One-to-one lessons: will help you develop your language skills in a short period of time and benefit from classes designed specifically for your needs and desires.

The course starts every Monday. The minimum age of students is 14 years. Level - from A1 (Elementary) to C2 (advanced user).

Basic course for beginners

The basic course for beginners offers 20 or 28 lessons per week for 2-4 weeks. The program is carefully designed to develop the necessary language skills in a supportive learning environment with a maximum of 8 students per class. This course is ideal for students who want to gain basic language skills, learn and use everyday English during a short visit to the UK. It's also a great starting point for aspiring students who need to become familiar with the English language before studying for a longer period (e.g. English for business or international semester courses).

The course starts every Monday. The minimum age of students is 14 years. The required level of knowledge for enrollment is A1 (Elementary). Start dates: January 29, June 25, July 30, September 10.

International Semester Course – ISC

The International Semester Course is suitable for students wishing to experience British life and study General English for 6 months or longer. Additional modules can be: preparation for Cambridge English or IELTS exams, English for business or English for art and design. As part of the program, you can choose either an intensive program of 28 lessons per week, which will help you make maximum progress, or 20 lessons per week in the mornings or afternoons, if you want to have more free time.

Classes start every Monday. The minimum age of students is 14 years. The course is available for students with level A1 (Elementary) and above. Aspiring students can complete the General English for Beginners programme before progressing to the ISC at the beginner level.

IELTS Preparation

Students can choose to study for 4 weeks or more. This course offers 20 IELTS preparation lessons in the morning with the option to add 8 afternoon lessons of General English or Business English. IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) is an internationally recognized exam that is a prerequisite for admission to universities in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. IELTS is also recognized by international employers.

The IELTS exam includes 3 components:

  • academic writing, including an essay,
  • oral exam (conducted one-on-one between the student and the examiner),
  • Listening – you will be asked to listen to the recording and answer a series of questions from 4 separate test sections.

General English + English for Business

This group lesson course is designed for people who want to improve their level of English, develop their skills in using English in a business environment (making presentations, writing reports and writing emails). It combines 20 morning lessons of General English with 8 afternoon lessons dedicated to English for Business. Students can study from 2 to 12 weeks. Topics covered will include organizing business meetings, negotiations, using the phone for business purposes, making presentations and writing professional reports, emails. Students can also choose to prepare for the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC) during the course.

Classes start every Monday. The minimum age of students is 16 years. The course is available for students with a B1 (Intermediate)+ level.

Preparing for Cambridge English

Cambridge Assessment English exams are taken by many thousands of international students every year, they are accepted by employers and educational institutions around the world. Students who choose to take 28 lessons per week will take 20 Cambridge English exam preparation morning lessons and 8 afternoon General English or Business English lessons. The school offers B2 First and C1 Advanced exam preparation courses throughout the year:

  1. B2 First can be taken separately or as a module as part of one of the International Semester Course (ISC) programmes. It is designed for intermediate to upper intermediate English speakers. Progress is measured throughout the first B2 course, and at the end of each week there is a review of the study material.
  2. The C1 Advanced course is designed for native English speakers from the Upper Intermediate level to the advanced level. The C1 Advanced course begins with an entrance test and orientation, during which students are introduced to the C1 Advanced exam and to their peers. Progress is measured throughout the C1 Advanced course, with a review of the learning material at the end of each week.

Both courses aim to help students understand English at an appropriate level, demonstrate self-study skills and pass internationally recognised exams.

The minimum age of students is 16 years. The course is available for students with B1/B2 (Intermediate/Upper Intermediate) and B2/C1 (Upper Intermediate/Advanced) levels.

Students with accelerated learning usually join existing exam classes.

The program includes 20 morning lessons of general English and 8 afternoon lessons of English for art and design classes. This course is an ideal option for students who would like to learn a specialist vocabulary in the field of art and design – especially for those who wish to study this subject at a university or college in the UK.

The minimum age of students is 16 years. The course is available for students with a B1 (Intermediate) + level. Start dates: January 29, March 26, May 21, July 16, September 10, November 5.

Courses for teachers of English (TEC)

This is a two-week refresher course for non-native English teachers who want to expand or update their professional knowledge and teaching methodology, improve their own English language skills. Participants develop and research aspects of teaching methodologies and techniques, learn to evaluate and use various teaching aids and resources. There is no formal assessment, but at the end of the course, all participants receive a certificate of attendance and an English teacher certificate.

The course starts on January 8, July 30. The minimum age of students is 18 years. Level – B2 (Upper Intermediate) +. The duration of the course is 2 weeks and includes 26 hours of lessons per week.

CELTA Course

The program offers a face-to-face course leading to a Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). This is a 4-week intensive study program that includes supervising experienced faculty, completing coursework, and 6 hours of teaching practice. 

No previous teaching experience or knowledge is required, but applicants must have a college degree or a level of education equivalent to that required for university admission. Non-native English speakers are welcome, provided they have a high level of English proficiency: at least C1 in the Common European Framework of Language Instruction (CEFR), preferably C2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

After submitting the application, candidates will be sent an assignment for a preliminary interview that will test your knowledge of the English language, and some questions will also be asked about the process of teaching and assimilation of knowledge. Candidates who complete this assignment at the appropriate level will be invited for an interview (face-to-face or online). During the interview, the instructor will assess your suitability for the course, and you will be asked to complete an additional short written assignment.

Accommodation, meals, prices

London Highgate programs allow you to choose between homestays, residences, and hotels.

Residences are available for families and students over the age of 16:

  • Chester House is a popular year-round residence in Muswell Hill, located approximately 15-20 minutes by bus from London Highgate. It offers single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Facilities include a games and music room, a living room, a TV room, a gym, a laundry room and a kitchenette. 
  • Chapter Highbury – This residence offers single rooms with private bathrooms and kitchens, a shared cinema, games and gym classes, study rooms. It is a short bus ride from London's Highgate district.
  • UCL Residence (up to 18 years old) - a summer residence located just 25 minutes by Highgate Tube and close to the West End
    and Oxford Street. Residents are provided with breakfasts and dinners, which are served in the dining room every day. 

Homestay accommodation is a popular option for those who would like to practise their English outside of the classroom and learn about British culture, the lifestyle of the locals. Homestay is:

  • The most affordable option,
  • Carefully selected, supervised families,
  • Choice of half board: breakfast or self-service,
  • Choice of room type: single or shared,
  • Bed linen and towels are provided,
  • Approximately 15-45 minutes from the school.

Also, students can rent a private house, which is looked after by their owners: this option is similar to living in a host family, but gives more freedom and independence. Renting a house is possible when recruiting a group of more than four students who want to live together.

Families enrolling in the Family Course can be accommodated in hotels that partner with the institution.

Activities London Highgate Summer School

Throughout their stay on the programs, students will combine lessons with fun activities, sightseeing. Activities range from bowling and cinema trips to participation in charity events and field trips.

Children are offered sports competitions, creative master classes, trips to entertainment centers: an oceanarium, a zoo, an amusement park, a cinema.

The family courses have three afternoon activities + a weekly full-day excursion throughout the week. Families can play sports in the park, walk around the neighborhood with a guide, visit the nearest attractions: museums, squares, art galleries. On weekends, they are given the opportunity to spend time in Brighton, Cambridge or London.

From year to year, regular events in the summer months are:

  • June: International Cooking Day, Movie Night & Quiz Night, West End Walking Tour, Hemstead Heath Picnic,
  • July: musical Mamma Mia!, sports in the park, summer fair in St. Giles, movie nights,
  • August: A tour of The London Eye, the Sky Garden, a day of sport in London.

The London Highgate Study Grounds is a beautiful building in a fashionable suburb. Highgate has excellent transport links, so the road to central London will take only 20 minutes by tube, and places for students to stay are located about 15-45 minutes by bus. Local sports, shopping and entertainment centers offer students options for spending time.

The road to the airports takes:

  • Heathrow - 50 minutes by metro,
  • Gatwik – 60 minutes by train or subway.

Surrounded by its own English garden, the academic building is ideal for students who are looking for a calm and beautiful place to study. The campus infrastructure includes:

  • 25 classrooms with interactive whiteboards, audio and video equipment,
  • A library with a reading room, open at any time of the school day,
  • Student café,
  • Music classes,
  • Large garden,
  • Outdoor picnic area,
  • A computer lab with tablets,
  • Bookshop.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the learning area.

Admission dates and extra charges

The education takes place on weekdays in the morning, and in the afternoon and on weekends, students attend campus and off-site events.

Total additional costs for all programs:

  • English classes alone with the teacher - £ 72 per lesson,

Enrolment process

The first step in enrolling in the course is filling out an online application form. It contains general questions, including the level of existing knowledge in English, the desired accommodation option, the need for a transfer and others. The questionnaire should be sent to the admissions committee, which will consider it on a first-come, first-served basis. If the vacant places in the selected course are not filled before the application is considered, and the applicant's documents are in order, the student will be enrolled in the program.

Perspectives

Upon completion of any of the London Highgate programs, graduates are issued a certificate containing information about the number of hours of study, achievements and progress: from the initial to the final language level. This document will perfectly complement the student's personal portfolio, help in obtaining a long-term visa or when applying to a school / college.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Applicants for summer programs must provide: a passport, medical insurance, a student visa or a residence permit in the UK. If adults wish to study at the Family Course, they must provide the same set of documents for their children.

The level of knowledge of English is not important when enrolling, but candidates should soberly assess their capabilities and answer the questions of the online questionnaire honestly.
