It is advisable to apply as early as possible, no later than six months before the date of entry. A certain number of places in dormitories are reserved for exchange students from HKA partner universities.

Most students find a room on the open housing market in Germany. A student support service operates a private room agency that assists in the search. On average, students find more than 3500 numbers through this exchange every year.

The most affordable housing is offered by the Student Services Housing Association in conjunction with paritätische Sozialdienste. Instead of paying rent, students provide their landlord or hostess with practical help and support in everyday activities: it can be shopping, childcare or gardening. The general rule is: 1 sq. m of housing = 1 hour of assistance per month. Only utility costs must be paid by the student.

The university has its own dining room. The Moltke Canteen is located on Moltkestrasse next to the university and provides meals for students of the HKA, the nearby Academy of Arts and the Pedagogical University. The dining room is located in the basement of Building A on campus.
