House of Sir Georges-Etienne Cartier

Many sights are outwardly inconspicuous and undeservedly deprived of the attention of tourists, but inside they have a chic interior, a rich history and interesting excursions. Such a place is the house-museum of Cartier - a Canadian businessman and politician, prime minister, who held this post from 1858 to 1862. In Kahn and de Cartier named in honor of the many facilities and the house-museum tells about the life of politicians at that time. It is located near the Notre Dame metro station, near the old port and the town hall.

The history of the features of the museum

Entering the Cartier Museum, tourists seem to fall into the middle of the 19th century: the perfectly preserved Victorian interior, museum workers in costumes of that era, fascinating stories. When you are in Montreal, be sure to visit the museum if you are interested in the history of Canada and the lives of people in the mid-19th century. The history of the mansion-museum is rich and interesting:

  • 1837 - construction of the mansion (the name of the architect, alas, is unknown)
  • 1848 - the surrounding area became popular and inhabited, and Cartier decided to purchase this mansion for living and legal activities
  • 1855 - Cartier left home
  • 1871 - the building was converted into a hotel
  • 1881-1884 - the house was known as the "Grand Pacific Hotel"
  • 1893 - the building partially became urban property
  • 1939 - the house became a guesthouse
  • 1964 - the museum was opened in the building
  • 1973 - the museum was completely transferred to state ownership
  • 1985 - the building became the official Cartier Museum.

During his stay in the mansion from 1848 to 1855, a politician and lawyer ordered the installation of modern gas lighting and a heating system, which was not in every building.

In 1893, when the city partially owned the house, its design was changed, and its height lost 3.5 meters. It is noteworthy that the external unattractiveness of the building plays into the of tourists' hands: you can safely visit it in a cozy setting, without crowds of tourists. Often the tour is organized for one person - during the tour you will learn the history of the house, partly a Cartier biography, you can participate in a number of events:

  • Victorian costume photo shoot
  • Lunch in the reception hall, where noble nobles gathered 150 years ago.

When traveling with children, it is advisable to visit the museum on Saturday or Sunday: on these days, sightseeing workers put on costumes and offer entertainment to young tourists. The museum itself is small: you can get around it in half an hour, which does not have time to tire children who may not be interested in the excursion. During these half an hour you will see a house in which every bit, every meter corresponds to the decoration and the interior that were at Georges-Etienne Cartier.

You can visit the museum from the end of June to the end of December: the ticket price for adults is 3.90 CAD $, for children under 16 years of age - 1.90 CAD $.
