IB Diploma

IB (International Baccalaureate) is an internationally recognized two-year program that completes the course of complete secondary education and prepares graduates to enter the best universities in the world. The duration of the course is 2 years (6 trimesters): throughout this time students take a variety of exams, tests, and final examinations give the right to possess a prestigious, highly-listed IB certificate.

The curriculum includes the study of 6 selected disciplines from 5 subject groups, as well as 3 key academic components, mandatory for all. Students develop the skills of critical and analytical thinking, will actively work both independently and in groups, will learn to create and present personal projects and research - all this will prove to be very valuable in any prestigious university.

Items for selection are included in the following groups:

1) Primary language (or mother tongue): English, Russian, Spanish, German, Chinese (usually Mandarin), Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, Norwegian, Portuguese

2) Foreign language: Spanish, French, English as a foreign language, German, Chinese

3) Social sciences, humanities: psychology, economics, geography, IT-technologies, philosophy, history, business and management

4) Natural sciences: physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, society and the outside world

5) Mathematics and exact sciences: mathematics, higher mathematics, mathematical analysis

6) Art: theater and drama, fine arts, music, cinema.

In addition, students attend classes in three compulsory disciplines, allowing you to check and perfect your knowledge in practice:

  • CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) - volunteer and charitable, creative and sports activities, disclosing the potential of each student
  • Writing an extended essay - creating an in-depth study on the selected topic (chosen independently and consistent with the teacher) and writing an academic essay (volume from 4000 words)
  • General theory of knowledge (TOK) - students will learn to understand the world in various ways, master different types of knowledge and will be able to successfully apply these skills in practice.

Upon successful completion of the program, students can receive one of two educational documents:

  • IB Diploma: successful passing examinations in all selected subjects and 3 compulsory subjects, maximum score on exams - 45
  • IB Certificate: a more loyal and flexible version of the program, usually offered to American students. Exams can be taken only for selected subjects and do not take final tests in 3 additional disciplines, and instead focus on effective preparation for the IELTS, TOEFL, SAT or ACT exams.

A-level

A two-year program for high school students (16-18 years old, 12-13 grades) is a true gold standard of British education. This is the main document that most British universities require when enrolling: an A-level certificate with high enough marks frees you from passing additional entrance exams and tests. The course lasts 2 years (6 trimesters): during the education students take written exams, tests and write a research (course) project.

The difference between the program - in a small number of subjects studied, in its academic depth and complexity, solidity. All the subjects to be taught by the student are chosen by himself: usually these are the same scientific areas, the study of which is planned at the chosen university. Of course, consultants, educators and personal trainers can help to formulate an optimal curriculum: as a rule, it includes 4-5 disciplines in the first year (AS-level) and only 3-4 of the previously selected ones in the second year (A-level). You can choose directions from the following list:

  • Mathematics and higher mathematics
  • Social studies and humanities: business, economics, sociology, psychology, law, applied informatics and IT, the theory of mass communications

Accommodation, meals, prices

Students can choose to stay in a host family or a general student residence - these are safe and comfortable options for living while studying in Oxford.

1) Host family

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

The requirements for incoming students depend on the program, to the place they are applying for:

1) IGCSE:

  • finished 8-9 class (scores from C and above - or equivalent)
  • Certificate of English: IELTS 4.5, EF testing from 41/70

2) IB Diploma:

  • completed grade 10 (scores from C and above - or equivalent)
  • Certificate of English: IELTS 5.5, EF testing from 52/70

3) A-level:

  • completed grade 10 (scores from C and above - or equivalent)
  • Certificate of English: IELTS 5.5, EF testing from 52/70.

Applications for the next school year are usually accepted until the end of May, but if the vacancies are filled, the reception may be terminated earlier. In this regard, you should submit documents at least for six months or a year: this will increase your chances of occupying a free place, help you better prepare for education and obtaining a visa, choose the best option for living.
