Channing School is an independent day school for girls from 4 to 18 years old.

The institution was founded in 1885 by Emily and Matilda Sharp in the company of the Reverend Robert Spears. The goal of the creators was to open a school where the daughters of priests could receive a first-class education and preparation for admission to universities. Having founded the educational institution, they named it in honor of one of the leading theologians of unitarism - William Ellery Channing.

From the very beginning, the school taught an extensive curriculum. A few years later, Channing School was officially recognized as an institution of high standards. Today, about 90% of students living near the campus study here.

Educational process

There is a Forest School at the establishment. It allows girls from the lower grades to attend several classes a week, taking place in a wooded area in a safe area. Students will be able to learn many important skills, explore the world around them.

Things to know about

During their education, many girls become fluent in two or even three languages.

Schooling begins at the age of four – the age when basic skills and important knowledge are laid easily and efficiently.

Students study in classes with one teacher until the second grade. From day one, the curriculum includes:

  • Spanish

  • Lessons at the Forest School.

From grades 3 to 6, girls receive specialized training in art, French and design technologies. The curriculum is complemented by a large number of trips, including travel with accommodation in grades 4-6.

Female students from the first days are taught in homework, which increases in complexity evenly with their growing up.

Senior School

Grades 7 to 9 are the years when students learn new skills and develop their strengths intensively. A serious academic program helps students understand personal interests, master complex sciences, and focus on upcoming exams. The curriculum includes such disciplines as:

  • Classical civilization,
  • Ancient Greek, Latin culture,

  • Modern foreign languages: German, Spanish,

In grades 10 and 11, girls prepare for final exams almost all academic time. At this stage, they already have a rough understanding of the set of subjects that should be emphasized, and qualified teachers provide students with time for individual consultations and classes in small groups to increase the chances of success.

Sixth Form

For two years, students in grades 12 and 13 prepare to take one of the most important exams in their lives – A-Level. Girls are offered a wide range of subjects, from which it is necessary to choose three or four disciplines of interest to them:

  • Classical civilization,
  • Art
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Informatics
  • Drama and theatre,
  • English Language and Literature,
  • French
  • History
  • Mathematics or a complicated version of it,
  • Philosophy and others.

In addition to academic classes, students attend counseling in the field of career, leadership, personal well-being, psychology and other important areas that can prepare a girl for the beginning of a truly adult life.

Accommodation, meals, prices

The school operates on a day-time basis and does not provide accommodation.

All students receive full meals prepared by a professional team of chefs. The menu includes dishes from fresh, healthy products, seasonal fruits and vegetables. If students have special medical indications, the staff offers alternative meals.

The cost of lunches per trimester for different departments:

  • Preschool groups up to grade 2 – 260£,
  • Grades 2-6 – £315,
  • High school – £345.

Activities Channing School for Girls

Channing School has a huge selection of entertainment, including clubs and excursions - both local acquaintances with the culture of central London, and international, for example, trips to Cuba and Cadiz, sports competitions in Barbados and Austria. 

The musical direction is very popular among students - concerts are held every semester along with unofficial solo performances. The program "Music at the Tea Party" is organized weekly, where teachers, parents and female students can relax, communicate and show their talent in the format of mini-performances.

Students actively participate in many competitions of different directions: Young Enterprise, Teen tech and others. Replenishing their portfolio with individual achievements, girls practice their skills in natural and computer science, engineering and mathematics.

Support for charitable projects is at the heart of all the school's activities, and students are happy to take part in local, national and international initiatives.

Parents of female students are always in contact with the community of the institution in the role of members of the Channing Association, which gives families the opportunity to get to know each other better. Many parents conduct a variety of lectures and seminars, passing on their life experience to the younger generation.

The list of school-wide activities includes the well-known November fireworks, regular evenings of quizzes, board games and tastings for parents and teachers. Junior school activities include a tea party for newly arrived students in September and an annual social evening for girls in grades 5-6. High school girls regularly arrange discos and balls, visit cinemas and museums.

The campus of the institution is located in London, on the main street of Highgate. In several large buildings, female students are divided into classes: from preschool to senior department. Suitable premises are equipped for their training:

The white and gray walls in most rooms are enlivened by bright and comfortable furniture, and the open area of the school is completely safe and multifunctional, which encourages students to explore the world around them in the process of games and walks.

Admission dates and extra charges

The academic year consists of several trimesters:

  • Autumn: September-December,
  • Spring: January-March,
  • Summer: April-July.

During the trimesters, several weeks of vacations and weekends are organized in honor of local and international holidays.

Tuition fees include most books and stationery, activities and excursions. In addition, you will have to pay:

  • Some personal learning materials,
  • Entrance fees for GCSE and A-Level exams,
  • Meals - from 260 to 345 £ per trimester, depending on the class,
  • Music lessons – from £ 350 to £ 400 per trimester,
  • LAMDA lessons – £190 per trimester,
  • Non-refundable deposit upon receipt is £ 4500-6000, depending on the program.

Enrolment process

The admission process includes several steps:

  • Attending an Open House or contacting the admissions office online,
  • Completing an online or on-campus application,
  • Provision of required documents and payment of registration fees,
  • Entrance tests,
  • Waiting for the result of the tests and the official invitation to study.

In the junior department, the tests are conducted in an informal play environment. Within an hour, the girls communicate with the teacher, after which successful candidates are called up for re-evaluation. Future middle and high school students undergo an entrance exam for 100 minutes, the results of which are selected for the most potentially successful.

Enrolment statistics

About 200 children apply for 48 places in the junior department. Enrollment in other classes is even more serious, and priority is given to those applicants whose sister is already studying at Channing School.

In the seventh grade, there are about 55 free places annually, most of which are occupied by girls who have transferred from the junior department.

Perspectives

Some students go to other schools after taking the GCSE. Their choice falls on highly competitive public and private institutions, such as the Henrietta Barnett, Highgate and St. Helena Schools. Paula.

Those students who decide to complete their school education at Channing School enter undergraduate programs at Russel Group universities: Leeds, Edinburgh, Durham, Bristol, Oxbridge and others. Mostly graduates choose the humanities and languages, medicine, economics, politics and international relations.

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

Serious requirements are imposed only on those foreign applicants who enter the classes of middle and high school. They will need to provide:

  • Completed application with photo and personal documents,
  • Reports for the last two years from the previous place of study,
  • Reports of any specialists concerning special educational needs,
  • Registration fee paid = 150£,
  • The result of knowledge of English is not lower than level B2.

The application deadline is November.

Scholarships Channing School for Girls

The school offers many options for financial support both on the basis of academic success and for merits in creativity, sports and social life.

  • Academic scholarships are available to students from the moment of admission to secondary school, that is, from the age of 11,
  • Music scholarships and awards in the field of fine arts in the amount of up to 50% of the cost of training.

The Headmistress of Channing School has the right, at its sole discretion, to award more significant awards in exceptional circumstances.
