The Kelowna Center for Arts and Technology campus opened its doors more than a decade ago and is located in landmark Center, a campus-style business and technology center that serves the great Okanagan Valley and its surroundings.

The Center for Arts and Technology is not a typical community college or university. The Foundation was established more than 30 years ago by leaders in both media training and education. The journey has been a long one, and many different paths have been joined together – the end result being one of Canada's leading colleges in digital art and technical learning.

Today, the institution is recognized as one of the few schools that constantly produce successful students in the field of 2D animation, 3D animation, audio engineering, digital music production, event planning and management, film production, graphic and web design, interior design, photography.

The Center for Arts and Technology offers certain certification and diploma programs with specialized hands-on training for careers in digital art, design, entertainment, and information technology.

All diploma programs are implemented with a combination of teaching methods conducted by professional instructors and industry mentors to give a competitive advantage and a portfolio of experience before graduation.

Educational process

All programs at the Center are developed on the basis of extensive research and consultations with teachers and industry professionals. Content, texts, class times, teaching staff, etc. all the time. The Center reserves the right to make changes to these elements in order to reflect current industry trends, to ensure and maintain high educational standards.

Things to know about

The Centre for Arts and Technology (CAT) and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) have teamed up to create the CAT-BCIT program: an interagency agreement allowing CAT graduates to enroll in the BCIT Business School.

Pathfinder Programs is an in-house program that offers high school students in grades 11 and 12 the opportunity to take a course after graduating from high school while still in high school.

Diploma Programme

In just 15 months, students have the opportunity to learn all about the world of 2D animation. Animated characters aren't just seen on the big screen — they've infiltrated online games, apps, TV commercials, websites, and more.

Students will be prepared to immerse themselves in the job market with a professional portfolio and a demo, showing their talent and their style to potential employers.

Students will gain practical knowledge and experience in the following key areas of employment:

  • Background artist.

This accelerated 2D animation program will provide the skills and training needed to immerse yourself in the animation industry, including:

Pathway Programme

  • Age: from 17 years.

The Centre for Arts and Technology (CAT) and the University of Gloucestershire have teamed up for a multi-departmental agreement allowing CAT alumni to enrol in the Gloucestershire School of Art and media.

Students must also earn:

  • CAT Diploma with a final minimum average grade of 65%,
  • A minimum of 65% in English for Grade 11 (to meet english language visa requirements).

Upon completion of one of cat's qualifying diploma programmes, you need to be prepared to continue to develop your skills and knowledge in Gloucestershire's associated programmes:

  • Advanced Level Diploma in Interior Design and Technology → Bachelor (Hons) Interior Design (1 year).
  • 2D Animation and Digital Art → Bachelor of Animation (Hons) (2 years)
  • 3D animation → BA (Hons) animation (1 year).
  • Professional Photography → BA (Hons) Photography: Editorial & Advertising (2 years).
  • Graphic and Web Design – Bachelor of Graphic Design (Hons) (2 years).
  • Audio Engineering and Production → BA (Hons) Sound and Music Production (2 years).

Assistant Diploma Programme

  • Age: from 18 years
  • Duration: 9 months.

The Veterinary Hospital Assistant Diploma Program, designed for 9 months, will introduce practical know-how in key areas and help you immerse yourself in a career. Graduates of the program become qualified assistants of the veterinary hospital "on the front line" and regularly find useful careers in various animal care institutions:

  • Veterinary hospitals,
  • Animal Emergency and Intensive Care Clinics,
  • Nurseries
  • Non-profit organizations of animals,
  • Care companies.

This focused training program for veterinary hospital assistants will provide the skills and training needed to immerse yourself in the industry:

  • Medical terminology
  • Breed identification
  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical Procedures
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Office Procedures
  • Animal husbandry and exoticism
  • Toxicology
  • Surgical procedures
  • Nutrition of small animals

The VHA program has always been a popular course at the Center for Arts and Technology. Classes start in April and October.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Although the university does not offer on-campus housing to students, it can provide potential students with resources to help find suitable accommodation for the duration of their program.

A vibrant center for creativity and learning: visitors will be greeted at the reception and immediately see a wide range of student works on the walls, a close-knit group of employees and students, catch a sense of youth and ingenuity.

Admission dates and extra charges

Registration fee = $150.

Enrolment process

  • Tuition deposit

Once accepted into the program at the Center, a $500 payment must be made to complete enrollment: this deposit is processed in accordance with the General Directives of the Branch of Private Educational Institutions (PTIB) and will be deducted from your tuition fees. This payment is refundable if students are accepted, but they do not sign their contract – after signing the enrollment agreement, this deposit becomes a tuition fee.

  • Admission/Selection Procedure

Students who meet the entry requirements are notified within two weeks of the school receiving the completed application packages. A deposit is then required to complete the registration process and reserve a place until the remainder of the tuition fee is paid.

  • Tuition fees

The total amount is paid in advance on the basis of an enrollment agreement, which each student receives prior to acceptance. You can create a payment plan by arranging a meeting with the Financial Services Coordinator (OAC).

Entry requirements, how to apply, what is required to enrol

  • Transcripts (grade notes) from school

Formal or original transcripts are required for all middle and post-secondary courses taken prior to attending the Center for Arts and Technology. Copies will not be accepted. All applicants aged 18 and younger must complete high school and provide a transcript. Official copies of their post-secondary school certificates are offered to applicants aged 19 and over, as they are informative to the head of the department.

  • Essay

The essay must be printed and contain at least 250 words.

  • Portfolio for admission (only professional photography and animation).
