Description of Canbury School Private School

  • Founded: 1982
  • Location: Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, England,
  • Students' age: 11+ years old,
  • Number of students: 75+ people,
  • Language of instruction: English,
  • Type of study: mixed day school.

Canbury School was founded in 1982 by Mr. John Wyatt, a teacher at various independent and state day and boarding schools in the UK and USA. His stated goal is to create a community where every student can gain self-confidence through recognition of their achievements. The key to the existence of such a community is mentoring support, a constantly developing and improving program, a spirit of camaraderie and tolerance, and strong and constructive relationships between students, teachers and parents.

The founder planned to satisfy the need of parents for a small school that would guarantee students anonymity and safety. The first intake consisted of 5 students, over time, their number reached 75.

In 1990, the school acquired its own multifunctional sports complex, at the same time it acquired the status of charity, which made it possible to offer scholarships to students.

Educational process

Canbury School is an inclusive school that tries to offer places to all pupils, provided that teachers are able to meet their needs and that having such a pupil does not reduce the effectiveness of other pupils. Canbury School has experience in teaching pupils with dyslexia, dyspraxia, Aarskog-Scott syndrome, mild developmental delays, physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, hearing and vision impairments, emotional difficulties or anxiety-related problems, but is not prepared to accept pupils with serious behavioural problems.

Subject teachers adapt the pace and level of the curriculum so that all students are involved in the learning process. Teaching Assistants and the Additional Support Office provide assistance to students in need. The degree of support varies according to individual needs and can take the form of:

  • support from the teaching assistant during the lesson,
  • one-to-one lessons with assistants or teachers,
  • adaptation of the curriculum,
  • the use of corrective techniques.

Things to know about

Canbury School is located in a house owned by Malcolm Campbell, a British racing driver and journalist who set absolute records on land and water at various distances, as well as his son Donald. In 2010, a plaque "Historical Heritage" was installed in the hall in memory of the Campbell father and son.
