Description of CAE Oxford Aviation Academy

  • Year of foundation: 1939.
  • Hotel Area: Oxford.
  • Age of students: 18+.
  • Number of students: 400+.
  • Language of instruction: English.
  • Type: Air Academy.

It was opened in 1939 by the Mayor of Oxford as a flying club. During the Second World War it operated as an auxiliary unit of the Royal Air Force. Reopened in 1947, renamed Oxford Airplane Club. In the 50s, the air squadron was tirelessly replenished, by the beginning of the 60s CAE turned into a flight school for education civil aviation professionals. In 1961, Oxford Aviation merged with The Pressed Steel Company to become British Executive Air Services Ltd. (BEAS). A full-fledged campus was built on the territory, and since May 1962, training has been conducted as part of an integrated course for obtaining a license for a commercial pilot and flight engineer. Since 1963 - Oxford Air Training School.

During this time, the school has graduated more than 20,000 civilian pilots and engineers. It was here in 1989 that the first ever license to pilot a commercial spacecraft was obtained.

Since 1993 - Oxford Aviation Training (OAT). Since 2007 - part of the GCAT Flight Academy, part of the Electric and SAS Flight Academy, part of the Scandinavian Airlines System, in 2008 received the name Oxford Aviation Academy Ltd, the branding and THE OAT logo on the tail unit, as well as a new mask.

In 2020, a large-scale reconstruction project was announced, as a result, CAE Oxford will move to Gatwick Airfield.

Educational process

CAE ab initio training programs have been designed to meet a wide range of civil aviation licensing needs. They have been developed for and in conjunction with leading airlines and regional carriers around the world. In particular, we are talking about such programs as:

  • Commercial Pilot License (CPL)

The Academy offers several CPL programs, each of which is designed to prepare the applicant to become a professional airline pilot. All programs meet the curriculum standards required to obtain a license established by the relevant regulatory body and the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO). Upon successful completion, the graduate will receive a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) with qualifications in Instrumentation (IR) and Multi-Engine Aircraft (ME).

  • Air Transport Pilot License (ATPL)

The course is considered a flagship course in Europe and allows students with little or no experience to get a "frozen ATPL". This, in turn, makes it possible to obtain the right to work as a first pilot in an airline after acquiring skills for a specific type of aircraft and provided that national requirements for a minimum number of hours are met. As a rule, for modern companies we are talking about 1500 hours: as soon as the pilot receives the appropriate flight time, the license is activated, which gives the right to apply for the acquisition of the status of the commander of the aircraft.

  • Multi-aircraft pilot's license (MPL)

Each MPL course is developed individually for the partner airline and is designed for a specific type of aircraft. Training from the outset includes standard operating procedures (SOPs) designed for a specific employer. Companies instruct pre-selected cadets on an individual course, and then move on to typical, basic and linear training on a particular aircraft.
ATPL and CPL can be obtained as part of an integrated or modular program; The MPL is only available in its full version. This qualification is a guarantee of employment in one particular airline after completing the course.
