The College of Continuing Education, located in Bishop Burton, East Yorkshire, was founded in 1954 as the Bishop of Burton Farm Institute and was one of the first in the country to be awarded pivotal status for the exceptional quality of agricultural courses and outstanding level of student support in 1999.

The first agricultural college in the UK to receive dual accreditation from the Skills and Education Council's Quality of Learning Standard. In 2002, the University of Hull opened undergraduate courses at the college, and in 2017 this educational organization received the third place in the Teaching Excellence Framework ranking in the nomination "Standards of Student Training".

In August 2012, the college took over from the University of Lincoln in conducting advanced training courses previously held at Reisholm College, winning the competition and beating 16 other educational institutions in England and Wales.

In 2014, construction began on a new additional campus with farms and dormitories for students.

In 2008, the college was included in the list of training grounds for preparation for equestrian competitions in the framework of the 2008 Olympics. In 2012, the indoor arena belonging to the college was used as a base for training the pentathlon team, and in 2015 it became the official Olympic training center.

The college's program is designed to meet the requirements and needs of individual students 15 years of age and older, designed to meet both the needs of the college, students, and industry, ensuring that graduates are ready to meet the pressing challenges facing the economy.

Training and practical assessment will take place under the supervision of experienced teachers with a brilliant academic reputation, many of whom are holders of master's and doctoral degrees.

The college offers training taking into account the individual characteristics of the training and the capabilities of the student in such areas as construction, zootechnics, environmental and agrotechnical studies. The task of the educational institution is not only to train professional personnel who are ready to accept and cope with non-trivial challenges, but also to develop in its students independence, determination, readiness and the ability to cooperate to solve the problems facing them.

Mentoring assistance of teachers, the possibility of practical training on experimental farms and fields, the possibility of direct transition to advanced training courses or HND (C) programs make the course in demand and relevant, and graduates of the program - in demand in the labor market.

Higher National Diploma (Certificate)

  • Age 18+;
  • Duration – 1/2 year;
  • The language of instruction is English.

The Higher National Diploma (HND) qualification uses teaching and practical elements to prepare students for a specific job and/or career. This professional qualification, available for dozens of fields – from photography and computing to engineering, agricultural engineering and agricultural machinery management – is suitable for everyone.  

Developed with input from the national Ministry of Education and available in the UK and a number of other countries, these courses were originally designed with an eye on practical work. As a result, HND is in high demand by employers and is well suited for students who want to gain a more practical work experience, advance their careers and prepare for admission to higher education institutions.

HND is a fifth-level qualification; it can be awarded by several national bodies and associations, the most famous being BTEC HND. HND costs 240 credits – 2/3 of a standard bachelor's degree, or a full-fledged basic degree.

To study under the program, an A-level qualification or equivalent is required.

As a rule, the duration of such a course with a full-time study day is two years, with full-time correspondence training it can last up to four years.

Basic Degree

A basic degree is an independent qualification in which the preparation lasts two years; the equivalent of an HND or 2/3 of a bachelor's degree (levels 4 and 5). Upon completion, students can continue their studies to obtain a bachelor's degree.

By studying a basic degree, students not only gain the necessary qualifications, but also acquire extensive knowledge in their subject area under the supervision and mentoring support of professional teachers with the highest qualifications.

After receiving a basic degree, students can continue their studies for a bachelor's degree, take advanced training courses or immediately start working. Thus, the study of a basic degree opens up many career paths and decisions for the graduate, to distinguish himself from other applicants in the eyes of the employer, as well as to combine work with further training.

Classes are held on a flexible schedule on weekdays, weekends or evenings, which opens up learning opportunities for young people in different life circumstances.

A number of mechanisms are used to assess academic performance, both current and final, including written papers, tests and examinations, project work, group work, presentations and workshops – depending on the discipline.

By embarking on a higher education program at bishop Burton College's university center, students begin an exciting and exciting new chapter in their lives — whether they are receiving postgraduate studies for the first time or not.

The college at all levels of training, including undergraduate studies, combines expert support and outstanding resources (which are not always available at the largest universities), an individual approach, flexibility and adaptability. Accommodation, meals, prices

The college offers students residency. All rooms are equipped with the necessary furniture, including a bed, a desk, wardrobes and shelves for storage, a bathroom. Free parking spaces are assigned to each room, and free wireless Internet is available throughout the campus.

Students can use the laundry (payment by coins, bank card or mobile application). On campus there is a licensed bar, a dining room and several cafes.

There are two classes of accommodation: half board or self-catering. Both packages include the possibility of using the gym, free guarded parking and other services. However, if half board includes a £1,000 food card that can be used to pay for meals at any on-site establishment, the self-service option assumes that students will buy and prepare their own meals using access to an equipped oven, stove, microwave, kettle, large shared fridge and lockable cabinets.

The cost of accommodation in a room with half board will cost £ 5964 (the price includes a food card for £ 1000). Self-catering rooms cost £5214.

Activities Bishop Burton College

Students are offered a variety of options for amateur activities and extracurricular activities. The student council is responsible for the organization. These can be additional academic classes, support groups, psychological assistance, clubs in which students are engaged in music, fine arts, singing, expressive and dramatic arts; there is a Model UN, discussion and debate clubs.

The College organises regular tourist trips to various cities in the North of England and Scotland, London. There is a tourist club, whose members spend their leisure time hiking, cycling, sailing and kayaking, kayaking, boats.

Facilities and equipment at Bishop Burton College

The second half of the noughties was an era of intensive development and reconstruction with a total cost of over 17 million pounds, resulting in the creation of new animal farms, a student stadium and dormitories.

The college campus is located in a picturesque hinterland in East Yorkshire, near Beverly, in a pastoral area reminiscent of paintings by artists of the first half of the XIX century. At the same time, the infrastructure of leisure, entertainment, trade is quite developed; the town has restaurants, nightclubs and shops, and the proximity to York, Leeds and Hull allows you to touch medieval history, enjoy English and European cuisine, national culture, as well as the widest selection of shops.

The campus area exceeds 360 hectares, which house a student hostel for 300 people, two dormitories for teachers, a sports complex and a stadium, pig and sheep farms, as well as numerous educational complexes and public catering plants.

On campus there are:

  • A fully operational farm of 890 acres, divided between arable and pasture land, farms for pigs, cattle and sheep, as well as a fleet of the latest technology;
  • The Center for Agricultural Innovation (CAI), which engages in agricultural research and development in partnership with NFU Mutual;
  • Specialized department of keeping animals with more than 1000 heads;
  • Modern construction and engineering workshops;
  • Sports and fitness center, which includes 3G and grass fields, gyms, physiotherapy department, gym and dance studio;
  • An outstanding equestrian center with many horse riding arenas, a therapy and rehabilitation center, a stable, a fitness center for riders and a hall for performances;
  • Learning Resource Center (LRC) with state-of-the-art classrooms, subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, light fiction to help students relax, and more;
  • A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) center with multiple labs and a variety of resources, including virtual simulators.

Admission dates and extra charges

The autumn semester lasts from September 5 to December 16, the spring semester - from January 4 to March 31, the summer - from April 17 to June 30.

Enrolment process

Applications for admission or degrees must be submitted through the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS). Part-time degree applicants can do this using the application form posted on the website.

Applications for the year in which you wish to take the course open in September of the preceding year and end in January; in some cases, the acceptance of applications may be extended until September (subject to the availability of vacancies).

Expat students should show that the applicant speaks English at a sufficient level, and also has the qualifications necessary for admission to the national university. The college requires a minimum of 550 points in the TOEFL test, a minimum of 6.0 points in the IELTS or GCSE test at level 4 or C or equivalent.

Qualification documents must be provided with a certified translation into English.

Bishop Burton does not provide assistance or support in obtaining a visa or sponsorship.

To study at a college in the UK, a student will have to confirm that he has a certain amount of money in his account. This can be a personal account, a parent's account or a sponsor's account. Money must be credited to this account no later than 28 days before the application is submitted. For college students, this amount is £9207 (£1023 per month for nine months).
