Askham Bryan College is a specialized college offering programs for students from 16 years old.

The institution was founded in 1936 as the Yorkshire Agricultural Institute, the first enrollment of students took place in 1948. Now the college offers many courses in the fields of agriculture, animal keeping, veterinary medicine, engineering and many other areas. Students can get a bachelor's or master's degree, a diploma of 1-4 levels.

Foundation Learning

The program is designed for anyone who does not have qualifications, but have a desire to work in the field of agriculture. The course aims to develop basic skills and is based on several blocks:

  • Horticulture and conservation,
  • Animal care,
  • Farm animals, birds.

Students will attend classes three days a week: they consist in practice in gardens, a wildlife park and the Animal Department on campus, in theoretical lectures from specialists.

Accommodation, meals, prices

Residential buildings divide students by placing them based on age. Pupils under the age of 18 live in several buildings:

  • Arkendail and Bishopdale: single rooms with en-suite bathrooms,
  • Escdale, Farndale, Iburndale, Glacierdale and Harewooddale: single rooms with shared bathrooms on the floors,
  • Jervolks: double rooms with shared bathrooms.

On each floor there are kitchens with appliances, living rooms with TV and rooms for self-study.

Students under the age of 18 live on campus throughout the year, including vacations, on a full-board basis – three meals a day that are provided in the college canteens.

For students over 18 years of age are prepared:

  • Coverdale: single rooms with bathrooms,
  • Escdale, Farndale, Iburndale, Glacierdale, Harewooddale and College Main Building: single rooms with shared bathrooms on the floors,
  • Jervolks: double rooms with shared bathrooms.

Some rooms have private kitchens, living rooms, self-study and relaxation areas on the floors.

All students can attend canteens located on campus and use meal cards with an amount of £37 to £52 each week. In the dining rooms, meals are prepared according to a daily menu, including dishes for three meals a day, snacks, hot and cold drinks, pastries and cakes + vegetarian and dietary dishes without allergens. The total annual cost of accommodation and meals will be from 5372 to 6579 £.

Activities Askham Bryan College

During the academic year, there are many introductory events for applicants: morning hours, information evenings, demonstration seminars. Pre-registration is required before visiting.

A number of clubs are open on campus: sports, creative, scientific. Some of them are:

  • Football Association,
  • Film Society,
  • Rock climbing
  • Society for Charity and Volunteering.

Most of the events are organized by the Student Council, its representatives are elected at the beginning of each academic year to represent the interests of all students before the college management.

The York campus is located in the middle of the picturesque countryside, a few miles from the historic center of the city. York is considered one of the best places to study: it has two universities and two colleges that connect students of different nationalities and cultures. The city has many public places that promote self-development and the discovery of new interests: cinemas, concert venues, clubs, museums, restaurants and much more.

York has rail links to London and Edinburgh, which are up to two hours' drive away. International airports are a little closer – an hour away by public transport.

The Wildlife Park is one of the amazing places on campus, which receives about 20,000 visitors a year. The park is home to more than 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, many of which are endangered in their natural environment. College students work in the park in their spare time, caring for its residents.

On campus there is also a boarding school for dogs: the tinkers provide pets with basic training, care and comfortable living.

The college provides its students with free transport for trips to York and sightseeing nearby attractions.

Admission dates and extra charges

There are three semesters in the academic year:

  • Autumn: September 5-December 16,
  • Spring: January 3-March 31,
  • Summer: April 17-June 23.

Long holidays are provided from the end of June to the beginning of September. Classes are held on weekdays, Saturday and Sunday are considered days off.

Enrolment process

Applications for admission are accepted in an online format: applicants need to fill out a questionnaire and provide the required documents, and then pass an interview and wait for the results.

For admission to Askham Bryan College , all international applicants must provide:

  • Personal documents: valid passport, health insurance, visa or residence permit, etc.
  • Certificate of completion of the previous stage of education, transcript,
  • The result of the test of knowledge of the English language. Since the training takes place in English, it is desirable for students to know the language at least B2,
