Student visa to the Netherlands

Netherlands

Specific details

To obtain a tourist visa (short-term, with a stay of up to 90 days during 6 months) for the Netherlands, you should apply to the VFS Global Visa Center. If you require a long-term student visa, you should contact the Dutch Embassy in your home country to submit documents. Before doing so, make sure to prepare the necessary documents in cooperation with your educational institution. The long-term visa (MVV) is issued exclusively by an advance appointment at the Embassy.

If you are planning to visit multiple countries in the Schengen area, you should apply to the consulate of the country where you will be spending the majority of your time. In case the number of days spent in each country is equal, it is advisable to apply to the consulate of the country that will be your first destination.

Please note that the Consulate always has the right to request any additional documents that it deems necessary for making a decision.

Your civil passport and a copy of the main page containing your photo, as well as the page with your residential registration are required.

A fully completed and signed visa application form in English must be submitted. If the applicant is a minor, both parents or a legal guardian should sign the form.

Two color photos (3.5 x 4.5 cm) taken against a light background are provided.

Comprehensive medical insurance must cover the entire period of your stay and is valid across all European Union countries. The insurance should account for any potential costs related to medical repatriation, emergency medical treatment, urgent hospitalization, or death. A minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 is required.

For non-Dutch citizens: you should have a valid visa and registration, or a residence permit, or a temporary residence permit, or a work permit/patent, along with residential registration. These documents must be valid for at least three months beyond the date you plan to return to your home country.

An original invitation from a Dutch university or other educational institution specifying your place of study is required. This should be accompanied by a student card or certificate of enrollment if you're applying for a study visa to the Netherlands.

Confirmation of financial status: it could be provided by the inviting party, the employer, or the applicant for a visa themselves. A bank statement indicating a minimum of 34 euros per day for your stay in the Netherlands is recommended. The statement should be in euros, according to the Embassy's recommendation.

  • Additional requirements for minors:
  • A copy of the minor's birth certificate.
  • A copy of both parents' main civil passport page.

Parental consent

If the child is brought up by a single parent, an original and a copy of a notarized travel authorization from the other parent is required. The original will be returned by the Embassy and must be shown at the border upon departure.

For minors traveling alone, an original and a copy of a notarized exit permit from both parents are required. The original will be returned by the Embassy and must be shown at the border upon departure.

If the child is raised by a single parent, an original and a copy of the relevant document from the other parent (such as a death certificate or court decision on deprivation of parental rights) should be provided. The original will be returned by the Embassy and must be shown at the border upon departure.

A copy of the valid Schengen visa of the parent(s) traveling with a minor is necessary to provide.

If your trip coincides with your study period, the certificate should mention that you have been granted permission to be absent from classes.

Long Term Visa

For individuals planning to study in the Netherlands for a period exceeding 90 days during six months, it is required to obtain a Long Term Visa to the Netherlands, often referred to as the MVV visa. This study visa to the Netherlands is executed through the educational institution after enrollment and financial details have been settled.

The requirements for documentation should be thoroughly analyzed as provided by the educational institution, with financial issues typically holding significant importance.

To confirm financial status for the duration of the study period, there are a few options. These can range from providing a bank certification verifying the availability of required funds, transferring money into the university's deposit account either in part or in full, or obtaining a scholarship that covers both living and educational expenses.

Once all the necessary documentation has been received by the university, they will submit an application to the Immigration Service, who is responsible for the visa issuance decision. Typically, the processing of an MVV student visa to the Netherlands takes about 3-5 weeks. The university will then inform the student of the decision made by the Dutch Immigration Service.

After that, the student is required to make an advance appointment and apply to the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to submit the visa application. The Consulate will notify if further documents are required. Generally, applicants are asked to bring their passport, two photos suitable for a visa (3.5 x 4.5 cm), documents related to the purpose of their trip, and a filled-out visa application form.

Initially, the visa is granted for three months for entry into the Netherlands. Upon arrival, it is mandatory for the student to register their residence with the local municipality for eight days and obtain a temporary residence permit.
