The Magical Power of High IQ: How Important Is Intelligence Quotient?

The Magical Power of High IQ: How Important Is Intelligence Quotient?

About the intelligence quotient people started talking at the beginning of the XX century. William Stern studied the features of intelligence depending on age, operated with the concepts of "mental age" and "chronological age" and believed that the relationship of these two phenomena gives an idea of the level of intelligence of a certain person.

Later, tests were developed that could test different abilities:

  • Ability to generalize
  • Ability to count well
  • Aspect
  • Logical thinking.

Relativity of IQ test results

IQ tests (intelligence quotient) are relative, designed for a certain age of a person. A child may have a higher IQ than an adult, but that only means that child thinks faster than their peers with lower scores.

It was verified that a person with a high IQ (in different tests, the maximum score is from 130 to 170) has more learning abilities, learns the material faster. Many people use IQ tests when hiring people who do not have experience. It turned out that this really affects future productivity, especially in those professions where training is constantly required. However, this influence is not so strong - success in any activity depends on many factors, on the sum of personality traits.

New tests are constantly emerging, but many of them do not effectively assess a person's capabilities. The most reliable tests are considered (in descending order):

  1. Eysenka
  2. Wexler
  3. Ravena
  4. Amthauera
  5. Cattella.

There is no single standard for IQ tests.

Tatyana Chernigovskaya on IQ test results

A world-renowned scientist, twice Doctor of Sciences (biological and philological), a specialist in the theory of consciousness and neurolinguistics, Tatyana Vladimirovna often discusses issues of consciousness, intelligence in the media and social networks. In social networks, they like to quote various answers of Chernigovskaya to the questions of interviewers, because it is always witty, understandable and interesting. Tatyana Vladimirovna makes ordinary people, non-specialists, think about questions that often professionals do not have an answer to. This causes respect and genuine interest.

About the results of IQ tests Chernigovskaya expressed skepticism, believing that they describe only the ability of a person to quickly count. She herself tried to pass the tests when the version of IQ first appeared, and received a non-inspiring result. Of course, no one would think to doubt her intelligence: the merits of the scientist are well known to the scientific community.

Tatyana Vladimirovna does not completely deny the importance of the intelligence quotient, but emphasizes that on the basis of test results it is impossible to draw conclusions about the intelligence of a person as a whole, only about one of its sides. Researchers of human intelligence still have a lot of work to do, IQ should be part of a larger approach to the study of mental abilities.

Chernihiv opposes forcing the development of the child, recalling that the rate of development depends on genetic factors.

"The programs by which the brain develops are genetically determined. Einstein at the age of five barely spoke, could not read, he was considered mentally handicapped. "

However, the brain develops only when it learns complex material or solves complex problems. The main thing is that the development should be smooth and non-violent. Recognized geniuses - Mozart, Pushkin - who made an incredible creative breakthrough, did not always have a high intelligence quotient, but few people care.
