Roman theater in Merida - history

Merida is located on the territory of the ancient city of Emirit Augusta - the capital of Lusitania. The theater was built in 16-15 BC. It underwent several reconstructions, one of them at the end of the 1st century AD and the beginning of the 2nd, during the reign of Emperor Trajan. During these works, a wall was erected, which has survived to this day. In the 6th century, under the Emperor Constantine, a pavement was erected around the amphitheater and decorative structures were installed. In the Antiquity period, the theater was completely abandoned.

The Roman theater today is part of the ancient city complex in Merida, it is considered the largest surviving monument of ancient architecture.
