Description of Shiplake College Private Boarding School

  • Location: Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
  • Educational programs: KS3 (middle), GCSE, A-Level
  • Age of students: 11 to 18 years
  • Type of accommodation: full board, boarding house (residence)
  • Total number of students: 400 people
  • Type of studying: from 7 to 16 years - only boys, mixed - from 16 to 18 years (without residence of girls on campus).

The independent private school Shiplake College accepts boys from 11 to 18 years old and girls for the high school program (16-18 years). Here there is both a daytime form of education and a boarding house (from 13 to 18 years, only for boys), the total number of students is 400 people. The school is located in the county of Oxfordshire, a small town of Henley-on-Teems: the journey to London takes only about an hour. It is a cozy, picturesque area on the river bank - the total campus area reaches 18 hectares.

Shiplake College was founded in 1959 as a men's school, and it was not until 1999 that girls began to be taken exclusively to the graduate, senior Sixth Form program. Each child here is perceived as an independent person and at the same time as a member of one large family: students can always rely on help, friendly or helpful advice. Here, active teaching, constant involvement of students in the learning process, live and direct communication is practiced, trying to get as far as possible from the traditional format of boring monotonous lectures.

A large number of sports teams and creative, musical groups, choirs and orchestras work here, various concerts and events, competitions and relay races are constantly arranged. This helps to educate the students in the team spirit and the feeling of a comradely shoulder, self-confidence and one's own strength, to show their own talents and abilities, to develop a natural giftedness.

Thanks to the small, chamber size of Shiplake College, no one is "lost": everyone knows each other, everyone moves to success together, catching up with leaders and helping the laggards. Small classrooms make it possible to implement an individual, personal approach, give due attention to each student, carefully monitor personal progress and the level of academic achievement.

The institution is regularly inspected by an independent ISI commission (Independent Schools Inspectorate) - according to the latest (2010) results, the following results were achieved:

  • Excellent: the level of child care and development, the quality of childcare, learning conditions, childcare and safety, working with parents, the level of education and boarding
  • "Good" score: academic successes of children, quality of school management, organization of extracurricular education, quality and organization of the curriculum, quality of teaching.

Graduates showed excellent results in 2014:

  • GCSE: 87% received marks A*-С for 5 exams (including English and mathematics), and 28% of them received the highest scores A*-A
  • A-level: 41 % of the graduates received grades from A * to B, with 27% earning the highest scores of A * and A.

All children of all nationalities and religions are accepted for education, officially Anglicanism is accepted at the school.

Why are UK primary and secondary schools so highly regarded?

A primary aim is mastering English from a young age. Students in British boarding schools grow in independence, leadership, and self-reliance. Class sizes are small, allowing teachers to focus on individual needs more than in public schools. For working parents, the all-encompassing environment of boarding schools is appealing – offering everything from ballet to tennis and piano lessons within the school day, eliminating the need for additional travel. Many schools also provide comprehensive weekend programs, keeping kids engaged and safe on campus, though this varies by school.
