Kings Monkton School is a non-selective, inclusive private school located in the heart of Wales' thriving capital, Cardiff. The school believes that children who feel happy and safe achieve the best academic results, so they create an inclusive family community based on a happy, innovative and outstanding learning environment.

The well-being of students is a value that the school holds dear. The small Kings Monkton School is a close-knit community where children are allowed to grow as individuals and excel in areas of interest to them. Educational process

The school starts at 8:30 a.m. every morning, but the Breakfast Club is open from 8:00 a.m. onwards. The last lesson ends at 15:30 when the buses depart from the territory.

The school curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for Wales and includes PSHE, French. The school offers each student from 5 to 10 different extracurricular activities or hobby groups.

Throughout the year, there are regular study trips for groups and lectures by guest speakers.

Things to know about

Kings Monkton School was formed by the merger of two schools, King's College and Monkton House, in 1994. Monkton House was founded in 1870 by Henry Shebrooks, and King's College was founded later in the same decade.

In 2014, the school opened a Sixth Form department offering a wide range of qualifications including A-Level, BTECs and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

Kings Monkton School celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022.

Kindergarten

Kings Monkton School provides high-quality kindergarten facilities that both care for the child and educate them. In partnership with parents, the school aims to create a supportive, lively and colourful environment where children can learn in an atmosphere full of fun and laughter – this is how Kings Monkton School instills positive attitudes towards learning and school in general. 

Children will begin their educational journey in the basic classroom, where they will follow an engaging play-based curriculum with the perfect balance of child-initiated and teacher-initiated activities. The classes are designed to stimulate and develop each child. All children are encouraged to explore, create and discover the six Learning Areas for Early Stage Children (EYFS).

Preparatory School

Preparatory school is a safe and happy environment for children from 4 to 7 years old, where a young child's natural energy and enthusiasm are nurtured, which are aimed at developing a love of learning. Small classes allow children to form close friendships and develop good relationships with their teachers. The learning process in such classes helps children to become more confident, to be able to express themselves and face difficulties by actively participating in their studies.

Particular attention is paid to the thorough teaching of literacy and numeracy, the first numeracy skills are developed through a balanced program of active games, more formalized written work.

Junior School

Junior School offers a stimulating learning environment for children from 7 to 11 years old. The curriculum is broad, balanced, challenging, multi-sensory and fun. 

The school strives to develop confident, independent students who are able to work with others, use investigative and debating skills, and be creative. Particular attention is paid to the core subjects of English, mathematics and science, with in-depth study of literacy and numeracy skills. 

Children have the opportunity to gain self-confidence by regularly performing in theatrical and musical productions and representing their school at various sporting events.

High School

These years are a turning point in a child's education: students are encouraged to make a choice of subjects to take exams and begin to shape their future academic path and career. The school offers students a wide range of exam options so that they can tailor their learning experience to their interests and passions: this includes natural sciences and humanities and languages, sports and music achievements are encouraged. Each student is supported to reach their full potential.

Each student in grades 7-9 will be offered a choice of clubs and the study of a range of subjects and languages; additionally, PHSE lessons are offered, which are accompanied by the work of the class teacher.

Sixth Form

The Sixth Form helps students become leaders through the path to success, independence, and opportunities in the modern world.

Kings Monkton School allows students to focus on areas of study that they love and are truly passionate about. A wide variety of subjects are available to students, including English, Mathematics, History, Chinese, Psychology, and Criminology. All subjects are taught according to A-Level, BTEC and Welsh Baccalaureate qualifications to provide pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to go to university or start a career.

Teaching students is more like university-style seminars, discussions are actively encouraged by teachers. The school treats Sixth Form students as adults and expects them to be responsible for both their own studies and the KMS family.

Accommodation, meals, prices

For pupils over the age of 16, Kings Monkton School offers exclusive accommodation in the heart of Cardiff city centre, so they can have a real experience of life in the Welsh capital. The hotel is just a 3-minute walk from the school and offers the following:

  • Studios for one person with bathroom, kitchenette and study,
  • Accommodation in apartments – students can share living space with their friends. The apartments are designed to accommodate 2-6 people.

During their studies, students are provided with half-board meals with breakfast and lunch in the school cafeteria. At Kings Monkton, we follow a healthy diet, provide a balanced diet, and there are several menu options available, including halal, vegetarian and gluten-free.

Activities Kings Monkton Private School

At Kings Monkton School, the program of activities is varied and exciting: students are provided with a wide range of clubs and communities, and master classes are held. Extracurricular time provides children with a unique opportunity to reveal their talents and practice skills that may be useful to them in the future.

Among the traditional extracurricular activities, the following can be highlighted:

  • Cooking classes for all students from grade 1 onwards. There are 6-week courses where children learn to cook from a range of recipes from different countries.
  • Music Lessons – Music Monsters, a world-renowned music course that helps students develop important musical abilities, feel the rhythm, and understand different types of musical instruments. The school works in partnership with the International School of Music (IMS) and offers music instruction daily from Monday to Saturday.
  • Extracurricular Activities – At Kings Monkton, we believe that teaching takes place outside of the classroom and provides important opportunities for students to learn and grow. Trips to other regions of the country and excursions are regularly organized for children of all ages.
  • Dramaturgy and Creative Writing – Every year, students write a short play of 500 words, the school publishes the work in official sources, and then the school partners, IMS, choose a play they like and turn it into a school musical in which all the students act, and the successful screenwriter becomes the executive director.
  • Science Club – In support of the STEM curriculum, students attend a science club to develop their curiosity and have fun in the lab.
  • Clubs at lunchtime. Include Game Club, Chess Club, Pokémon Club, Gym Club, Minecraft Club, Football and Digital Clubs.

Kings Monkton School works in partnership with several different organizations to ensure its students have the best possible opportunities and experiences during extracurricular activities. Activities are designed in partnership with students to reflect their needs and passions, and include:

Enrolment process

An applicant can apply for a Tier 4 (Child) student visa if they meet the following requirements:

  • Age — from 4 to 17 years old,
  • Desire to study in the UK,
  • There is an invitation to study at the school,
  • Consent of a parent or guardian,
  • Enough money to pay for tuition and accommodation,
  • Be from a country that is not part of the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland,
  • Eligibility Requirements.

You can apply for a visa up to 3 months before the date of your trip to the UK, and you can get a visa decision within 3 weeks.

When applying for a visa, the candidate must provide the following documents:

  • A valid passport or other valid travel documents,
  • 2 passport-size color photographs with the name written on the back,
  • Proof that the candidate is able to support themselves and pay for their course,
  • Proof of parental or other legal guardian consent if the applicant is under 18 years of age,
  • Invitation from the school.
