Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is a full-time independent school for girls from three to 18 years old.

The school was opened in 1999 thanks to the merger of two educational institutions: the Roman Catholic Mount Carmel and the St. Hilary School. Despite the Catholic heritage of both institutions, female students can now practice any religion.

Alderley Edge offers kindergarten, elementary, A-Level, GCSE, and Sixth Form programs.

Educational process

The use of iPad is included in the educational process of all students. Every girl, from preparatory to high school, is engaged in practical work, programming, creating movies or music using Apple applications. New technologies are being used to both support and improve classroom learning, with a particular focus on online safety, respect and responsibility.

Things to know about

Girls often visit public places with school staff, and can explore the area around campus on the way to the post office, To Waitrose or a park.

Early Years

The preschool program will provide girls with endless opportunities for discovery, learning and play. Planning of activities is carried out in accordance with the interests of the whole class, which has no more than 10 children. Teachers have extensive experience in communication and learning, so they understand the importance of an individual approach, maintaining and developing interest in learning.

Girls in the nursery and pre-school department study under the EYFS program, which covers seven different areas of study:

  1. Communication, speech and language development,
  2. Physical development,
  3. Personal, social, emotional development,
  4. Literacy
  5. Mathematics
  6. Understanding the world,
  7. Fine arts, design.

All girls will have an individualized training program. The institution uses an online platform called Tapestry, where parents can access their child's successes, photos and learning process, communicate directly with the school, sharing achievements at home.

Within kindergarten and preschool, educators expand educational opportunities through a specialized training program that includes French, music, mindfulness, physical education, and sensory play.

Prep School

  • Age – from 7 years
  • The training period is up to 5 years.

As part of the Prep School program, each child has an individual learning plan. The learning process looks at each girl's potential academic abilities and ways to succeed. Sensitive teachers conduct many activities to find the individual characteristics of each: seminars for the gifted and talented, training in sports skills under the guidance of a professional coach, an animation club for the development of new skills. Individual plans of female students are reviewed each semester to assess achievements and adjust attention to those subjects in which the student has difficulties in studying.

The schedule necessarily includes lessons in mathematics and English, reading and writing. Modern foreign languages, computer science and theatrical art are taught by high school staff, which contributes to a smooth transition of female students to the next stage. Physical education includes such areas as netball, hockey, cross-country running, athletics and lapta.

Seniors School

All girls are introduced to French, German and Spanish in grade 7. They then choose any two languages from the four proposed and continue their study until the end of grade 9.

Grade 9 students have the opportunity to earn a higher GCSE qualification, which is awarded to those who have conducted independent research on their chosen topic. This provides an excellent foundation for A-Level and university studies.

The focus in grades 10-11 is to encourage academic achievement at the GCSE level, opening up new opportunities. During Grade 11, each student is given individual guidance regarding the choice of A-Level subjects. Although some subjects are compulsory, there are still quite a few opportunities for personal choice at this stage. Compulsory subjects are:

  • English language
  • English literature,

  • Science.
