  • Students age: 2 to 18 years
  • Abbotsholme School: pre-school education, KS1-3, GCSE, A-Level

Abbotsholme School is an independent private co-educational school designed for children from 2 to 18 years old, providing day education and boarding. The total number of schoolchildren reaches 290 people, and among them many foreign students (about 40%) - the school is supportive of international pupils and gladly accepts them for their educational programs.

The school is located on the border of two large counties - Derbyshire and Staffordshire, near the town of Roster on the banks of the Dove River. The distance to London is about 235 kilometers, the journey takes about three and a half hours. Not too far away there are the large, including international, airports in the cities of Birmingham (up to 49 miles), Manchester (60 miles) and the Midlands (up to just 31 miles) - this makes it easy for students to transfer in both directions.

The Abbotsholme School was founded back in 1889 by the famous educator, Dr. Cecil Reddy, a native of Scotland. In the new school, he actively used the most modern, advanced methods of teaching in boys 10-19 years old (girls began to study only since 1969), thanks to which the school quickly became known for its fairly liberal procedures, not overly stringent conditions for studying. For entry on the mandatory program such subjects as art and music are obligatory. The doctor succeeded in attracting to the teaching of the best teachers from all over the UK, thanks to which the level of academic studying of graduates quickly became a kind of standard of quality. In addition to introducing art and music into the compulsory curriculum, the school also excelled in some innovations in the field of education:

  • These are active studies, laboratory works and practical exercises in the form of which most of the classes in the natural sciences are conducted;
  • Close attention to ecology, conservation of natural resources - the educational plan includes lessons on livestock and horticulture
  • This is the only school in the territory of England that has made a really significant contribution to the development of the national agrarian sector.

The basic postulates and principles of the school's work are preserved to this day, are carefully observed and respected.

The basis of interaction between pupils and teachers is a deep mutual respect for each other, which is strengthened not only in the academic process, but also during extracurricular activities, electives and creative pursuits. The educational institution strives to maximally reveal the talents of each student, his abilities and talents, lead him to success, also to develop self-esteem and self-confidence, to learn to rejoice in one's achievements and the successes of others. A lot of time is given to the education of respect for the environment, understanding of the importance of its preservation and the enhancement of natural resources.

Here children of any faith, confession can study - the school respects the Christian traditions, but does not single out or emphasize any particular religion. On the territory there is a small church, which can be visited by especially devout students.

The institution is constantly being scrutinized (the last one took place in 2011) by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) commission - the results of the latter are:

  • "Excellent" ranking: quality and organization of the curriculum , the organization of out-of-class education, the level of educational services and development of children, work with parents.
  • Evaluation "Excellent": academic successes of schoolchildren, quality of teaching and childcare; conditions of safety and studying; the level of accommodation is in the hostel; high quality management of the school.

How are the top UK boarding schools ranked, and how accurate are these rankings today?

Typically, these rankings are based on GCSE and A-level exam results. With the growing number of IB schools in the UKIB results are also gaining significance. Rankings mainly assess the number of candidates and their outcomes, so they're accurate in that sense. However, they don't necessarily reflect the quality of teaching and learning. Some elite schools have very stringent admission criteria, not accessible to all.

Review about Abbotsholme School

Victor
(Student of Abbotsholme School)

This year I finish the A-level course at the school Abbotsholme School. Once again contacting the Smapse manager, I decided to leave positive feedback, because I am very satisfied with the whole organization - both me and my parents.

At first, the arrival seemed terribly complicated and expensive, but the consultant at the first conversation solved a lot of questions. The guys take maximum work - I only collected the documents and characteristics from the school and wrote an introductory essay, passed the interview. Everything else was taken over by Smapse, even they registered us at the consulate for a visa and booked tickets. And now, being in England, I can write to them or call with any question. It's convenient, not so scary at first in a foreign country.

I was picked up by the excellent school! Such, you know, a spacious campus with old buildings and lawns - pure "Harry Potter". Despite the age-old buildings, everything is modernly equipped here: a bunch of computers, interactive whiteboards, language laboratories, electronic textbooks and manuals. Also, I like the residence: very cozy, clean, neat, the furniture is new. There are a lot of foreign students from all over the world, so we constantly gather in the common room, chatting, playing.

I am very glad that my parents dared to send me to England , again thank you Smapse!
